Terminology
Definitions Of Words You May Hear When Communicating
ROGER - The word "ROGER" (raw-jer) means "I UNDERSTAND" or "OK." Many people will be asked a yes or no question by ATC and will reply with "ROGER." This is not proper as it would be responding with "OK".
10/4 - You will never hear this word in ATC communication as they don't use it! 10/4 (ten-four) is primarily used by Police or Fire crew communication not ATC.
AFFIRMATIVE - "Affirmative" (ah-firm-it-ive) or sometimes pronounced "Affirm" (ay-firm) means yes. You will use this to reply to yes or no questions instead of "ROGER".
NEGATIVE - "negative" (neg-at-ive) means NO. You will also use this to answer a yes or no question!
WILCO - "wilco" (will-co) is short for "Will Comply". If a controller gives you a short instruction that does not require a full read-back then this word is perfect.
